THE IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY SMILE

THE IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY SMILE

  • On November 3, 2017

A healthy smile is not only important to make a good impression, but it is also a proof of your health status, both oral and general, since both are closely related and should be considered as a whole.

According to WHO (World Health Organization), oral health is defined as a state of being free from mouth and facial pain, oral and throat cancer, oral infection and sores, periodontal (gum) disease, tooth decay, tooth loss, and other diseases and disorders that limit an individual’s capacity in biting, chewing, smiling, speaking, and psychosocial wellbeing.

The excessive consumption of alcoholic drinks and tobacco, a poor diet and an inadequate oral hygiene are particular risk factors for numerous oral diseases. At the same time, these conditions are a risk factor for many other cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, pregnant women and people with diabetes.

According to FDI (World Dental Federation), 3.9 billion people suffer from oral disease throughout their life. Since a healthy mouth and body go hand in hand, it is extremely important to maintain a correct oral health, in order to demonstrate that you are in good health.

What should we do to keep our smile healthy-looking? These are the actions to be taken:

  • Using dental floss or an interdental toothbrush on a daily basis, as well as using fluoride mouthwash.
  • Quit smoking and reduce alcohol consumption
  • Brush your teeth right after every meal
  • Maintaining a balanced diet
  • See your dentist on a regular basis, at least twice per year.

In the end, a healthy smile is extremely important for your general health status, since the oral cavity is involved in most of the actions we take during the day, such as eating, speaking or laughing. This way, preserving a healthy smile must be a life goal.
